Growth Mindset

After reading the article, “The Simple Phrase That IncreasesEffort 40%” I was really intrigued in his findings. Students/people need to feel like they belong or they are doing something right, that they have a purpose. Giving students feedback can result in a negative or positive way. To have an effect on students, teachers need to show the students that they believe in them and expect them to do well. I definitely agree with this because I think people need the reassurance. Being human, there are always thoughts flowing in and out of your mind about if what you are doing is worth it at all. In personal experience, it just makes the student feel better and it will give them that boost in self-confidence.

Week 8 Growth Mindset

(Be creative:Pixabay)

There are a number of growth weakness and strengths that I can relate to in all of my classes. Some weaknesses that I have are staying in my comfort zone, focusing on my grades, choosing what’s easy, and doing things the last minute. I hate admitting to it but I am a huge procrastinator. Some times I feel I work better under pressure but, to be honest, I would rather not do that. It’s just that some times when I know something is due later that week, I can’t seem to wrap my head around it and focus. I really like how this course is designed. We are able to work at our own pace and learn how to prioritize what we need to get done. When this class first started, I didn’t really have a set schedule of how I wanted to balance this class with my other classes but now I think I am finally starting to get the hang of it.

Some of the strengths that I have definitely learned so far from this course are being open to feedback and being ready for things to change. I have learned that feedback is there to help you improve and it should not bring you down. I have also learned that change is good so you should always be willing to try new things. It doesn't matter if you fail or not, just as long as you know you tried. This course has definitely taken me out of my comfort zone and I'm glad it did because I would have never thought of writing these fun stories!

Growth Mindset: Go without complaining

I can definitely relate to the article, “What it’s like to go without complaining for a month.” I always catch myself complaining and I try to stop. I have noticed that complaining will not make things easier. It will just actually spread the negative attitude towards everyone around you. I have experienced this when I was around a classmate and she always complained about how she did not want to participate. I didn’t either because it was something totally different, but I tried to keep a positive mindset. It was really hard because as I was telling myself to be positive she would be complaining to me. I will definitely challenge myself this month to try and not complain. I know it will really help me as a person and make me enjoy life more. Negative thoughts will just cause more stress.

Growth Mindset

I thought the growth mindset was really interesting. I have never heard of Carol Dweck before. I can really relate to what she talked about. Usually when I get test grades back and they aren’t great, it really just knocks down my confidence and makes me want to give up, especially if I studied really hard for that exam. If I grew up with that growth mindset I feel like I would enjoy challenges more. Challenges usually scare me because I am afraid of failing and I hate how it makes me feel. One class that I am taking this year is Intro to Neurobiology and I am kind of nervous. I really hope I enjoy the class and not just be worried about grades the whole semester because there are only two exams.
